A History of Bottecchia

Bottecchia is an Italian bicycle manufacturer founded in 1926, after Teodoro Carnielli began working with the great racing cyclist Ottavio Bottecchia (the first Italian winner of the Tour de France). Carnielli was already an experienced frame-builder, who supplied bicycles to racers from the 1900s. He believed, however, that Bottecchia’s knowledge of racing bicycles would improve the pedigree of his craftsmanship.

Following Bottecchia’s untimely death in 1927, Carnielli kept Ottavio’s legacy alive; by the 1940s, Bottecchia were renowned for producing some of the finest racing bicycles in Europe. The Bottecchia legend was still going strong in the late 1980s, as Greg LeMond won the closest ever Tour de France on a radical Bottecchia time-trial bicycle.

Bottecchia continue to make a variety of bicycles to this day, with their lower-end models being manufactured in the far-east and assembled in Italy. Only the highest quality frames of Bottecchia’s current range are still made from scratch in Italy.
