Day One

Today Arne started his epic ride from Berlin to Bakewell (UK) to participate in L'Eroica Britannia on 22nd June 2014. His plan is to get there in 8 days on his beautiful Mercier vintage bicycle from 1960s. He wil be riding a total distance of around 1400km from Steel Vintage Bikes store in Berlin-Friedrichshain to Bakewell.

The fact that Arne is riding about 200km every day on a vintage bicycle makes this tour to a heroic challenge and we wish him good luck and sunny weather! He will be using Garmin Touring for navigation and GoPro Hero 3 cam to film parts of his epic ride! You will find the film here on Steel Vintage Bikes blog in couple weeks :-) Stay tuned!

The Route

Here is his route from Berlin to Bakewell:

The Bike

Arne is riding a very nice Mercier vintage bicycle from 1960s. It has a beautiful steel frame made of Reynolds 531 tubes and great looking NERVEX lugs. The rear and front derailleurs and the shifters are Campagnolo Record from the same era as the frame. The crankset is Stronglight. The brakes are iconic Mafac Racer with modern brake pads by Kool Stop (oh boy - they brake hard!). The pedals and hubs are Campagnolo Record. The rims are tubular Weinmann. The saddle is Brooks Swallow from 1960s and the bar tape is classic textile ribbon! He finished final maintenance of his bike (new cables, glued the tires, new chain and lube) just before starting his ride from our workshop. Check the photos below! More photos to be uploaded soon!
