Beschreibung

Peugeot was one of those early bicycle manufacturers which grew big and succsessful during the 20th century. Their first bike was already built as early as 1882. And their reputation grew partly to their racing activities. Peugeot sponsored victorious racing squads and cyclists from 1903 until 1983.

In this time they managed to win the tour de france 10 times and countless championships, classics and one day races. Who has not seen the pictures of Tom Simpson and Eddy Merckx, winning the World Championships 1965 and 1967 on a Peugeot?

Being one of the largest bicycle producers in Europe, their range was by no means limited to racing bikes. They offered the full range including sports tourers like this Peugeot PLX8 Randonneur from 1956.

Fast bicycle touring was particularly popular in France and artisan frame builders as well as larger companies were eager to offer the machines to support the riders. These machines had to be as fast as they had to be tough. Carrying heavy bags over long distances through all kinds of weather, sometimes covering more than 1000 kilometers in one go - these conditions required something comfortable, reliable and versatile.
All of these requirements are met by the Peugeot PLX8.

The tubing is a robust one, which Peugeot euphemistically called 'Helium'. Its alloy and a plating ensured that the frame was far less prone to rust than most other steel constructions of its time.
The Simplex/huret shifting ensured that riding at a speed similiar to the one of a road bike was absolutely possible.
A light system allowed the rider to go further even when the sun went down. And mudguards protected from rain and dirt, whilst the racks allowed for a pair of bags to be mounted.

If you want to know how smooth the riding on a 1950s randonneur was or if you are just looking for a most decorative bicycle:
The PLX8 with its beautiful patina is a great choice.

Please note that in order to ship the bike, it has to be partly disassembled.
