Description
Gino Bartali certainly is one of the most popular figures in cycling history.
Not only because he was delivering spectacular duels with his long-time rival Fausto Coppi, but also due to his character and human greatness.
Ezio Granelli was the founder of the San Pellegrino mineral water company and was a big fan of cycling. So much so in fact he bankrolled a stage at the 1955 Giro d’Italia and was looking to establish a team. In the pursuit of building a great team, he went to one of the greatest cyclists of the generation, Gino Bartali who eagerly threw himself into the challenge. With the additional funding, Bartali sourced one of the best frame builders in Italy to help him with the project, Francesco Galmozzi. Galmozzi had in fact worked closely with Bartali before when he built the Legnano track frames. Subsequently, from 1956 all of the professional Bartali bicycles were produced by Galmozzi. Our exemplar here is one of those Bartali San Pellegrino Team bikes that was produced by Galmozzi and is equipped with a Campagnolo Gran Sport groupset. In the first year of the collaboration, the team only consisted of six riders. Thus you can imagine how rare it is to get hold of one of their team bikes.
