Description:
In 1987, the professional cycling team Fagor decided to form a new équipe around the superstar of the year, Stephen Roche. That year he had managed to win the World Championships, the Tour de France, and the Giro d'Italia!
Roche was allowed to pick several riders and team members of his own choice to complete the staff for 1988. Among them was a man who had protected him in the Giro from angry attacks of Italian fans - who wanted his team mate Visentini to win the classification - by riding at his side. That man was Robert Millar.
The rider from Glasgow was known to be a bit of a loner and not easy to make friends with - but also as one of the most talented cyclists Britain ever had. In fact he was the only British rider who managed to get a place on the podium on all three major tours and the most successful Tour de France classification rider! That was until Bradley Wiggins changed that.
He would even had won the 40th Vuelta d'Espana in 1985, had it not been for an infamous collaboration of riders who enabled Pedro Delgado to snatch that victory from Millar.
Still, at the end of his career, the Scotsman had won the king of the mountains competition in the Tour de France and the Giro, several incredible tough stages, national titles, the Tour of Britain and much more.
In the Team Fagor, however, the exquisit group of riders of which he was part, could not in every aspect keep up with the great expectations during the grand tours - mainly because Roche suffered from knee problems and the British riders had some conflicts with the management. Still they showed quite a bit of their class.
Sean Yates for example managed to win the individual time trial of the Tour de France with an average speed which then had been the fastest in Tour history. The bike which made it possible was a great collaboration of MBK and a specialized French frame building studio.
One of those team bikes is the one we present to you here: Robert Millar's Pursuit Bike from 1988.
The frame is a slim and elegant sculpture with the extra twist of a split seat tube to stiffen the bottom bracket and shorten the wheelbase. As groupset serves a complete Campagnolo C-Record with the exception of the wheelset. The wheels are Mavic with nothing less than ultra rare Mavic CXP 25 rims!
To top off this sweet piece of cycling history, it comes with the original Fagor bike bag.
Yes, right, that is pretty awesome.
