SOcietà MECcanica was founded in 1973 by Oliviero Gallegati in Lugo di Romagna (Italy). Being a rather small manufacturer, Somec did not produce many bicycles, especially in the beginnings. Besides perfect craftsmanship they became famous in the 1980s for the use of advanced tubings, refined lugs, incredible pantographs and their special paintjobs
Our Somec Air 2001 is one of the finest masterpieces of the mid 1980s.
As for the material, fine Columbus SL and Air tubing has been used. Our Somec is the top model and as you would expect, the manufacturing quality is on the highest level. The lugs are microfusion masterpieces with beautiful cutouts and engravings, the seat stays are slim and special details show the renowned skill of Somec master frame builders. Speaking of special details, the model name "Air" doesn't just hint the tubing. The whole shifting system has been optimized with the shifting levers positioned on top of the down tube and cable routing routed completely inside the frame. You can spot just two tiny outtakes near the rear dropout and on the seat tube. The top tube comes furthermore with an extra ridge to take in the rear braking cable.

Number one went straight to Campagnolo's own museum. Number two was presented to the pope.

This exraordinary gruppo is a feast for eyes, not to mention that it is in pristine condition with just absolutely minimal signs of usage. And so is the rest of the equally fine parts. The lightweight Assos rims were some of the most prestigious choices of the 1980s, the bars have been covered in leather by Almarc and the Somec milled stem is a jewel on its own.
