Description
Some bikes have just great names, others just great frames. - Just as our Luciano Cerbai Special fillet brazed road bike from the 1980s.
Cerbai, founded 1946, is a traditional shop for anything two wheeled in Florence. Though they once made motorcycles and bicycles on their own, they unfortunately turned to selling 'normal scooters' nowadays.
Our bicycle tells a completely different story, a story of not being normal, not of mass production and not of motorization.
This Cerbai has been masterly crafted in a lugless shape with the joints being fillet brazed. In earlier decades this method would have saved the frame builder some money because good lugs were expensive, but in the late 1980s it was just used by artisans due to its time consuming nature. Fillet brazed frames can be made a bit lighter and stiffer than lugged ones and are a particularly helpful construction if a bike is made to measure with customized angles.
On top, the complete cable routing on our Cerbai has been transferred to the inside of the frame, keeping its surface clean of any braze-on cable guides or stops and thus adding a bit of aerodynamic advantage over the typical road bike frame of its time.
As parts we find - as one would have expected on such a special frame - a set of non-conformistic componentry, mostly by Gipiemme.
This bike is a highly functional racing bike which just waits to be put back to use.
Not an everyday bike but a bike you can use everyday as well as at Eroica California.
