Description
Cilo is an acronym for Charles Jan Lausanne-Oron.[1] The abbreviation of the name from the manufacturer "Jan" was transformed in "i" for pronunciation purpose in French. "Lausanne-Oron" refers to a holding in Lausanne, associated to the industrialisation of the city at the turn of the 20th century.
The company was founded in 1914 and became pretty successful.
Hans Knecht became world champion in 1946 riding a Cilo bicycle; other notable riders include Ferdi Kübler, Hugo Koblet and Tony Rominger.
Cilo co-sponsored the cycling team Cilo–Aufina with Aufina from 1980 to 1986, and then with Atari and Ciclolinea in 1992.
The bike we present here is based on one of their popular 1970s models. The Cilo of the 1970s was a beautifully crafted racing bicycle made of Reynolds 531 with the typical Swiss attention to detail. Regarding the design, Cilo usually went the classic way with little extravagance and decent colours. The material and geometry were as classic as the appearance.
We thoroughly checked this bike and built some new parts on it to help prolong its life another 40 years.
Among other parts, we chose a new wheelset and puncture-safe Continental tires. That way, the bike is capable of handling longer touring as well as shard plastered city streets.
Change the tires to some more vintage looking ones and you even have a great bike for vintage bike rides!
