Description
When in the 1990s Ernesto Colnago decided to equip the Mapei team with his C40 Carbon fiber bikes for the rough pavé race of Paris-Roubaix, the initial response was a mix of disbelief, worries and laughter. However, the construction proved all critics wrong and became the most successful bike model to ever race on the cobbled roads of Flanders and France.
This success was the final breakthrough for carbon fiber bikes in the bicycle world. More than two decades later, Colnago released a new top model: the C60. Like its predecessors it features uniquely 'star'-shaped tubes, the typical design which derives from the Colnago Master Steel road bikes. And like its predecessors it is constructed by bonding these tubes into special carbon fiber lugs.
Not only allows this for easy customisation of geometries, it also makes for a frame which is repairable, tubes can be replaced if need be. In general many parts of the frame have been desinged a little beefier than probably necessary. The idea was to build a bike that can last a lifetime and does not need to be trashed because the dropouts are defective, the headset-seats are toasted or the bottom bracket shell has worn off.
Sure, the frameset might be a bit heavier than most of its challengers, but its legendary stability as well as its unique style set it apart. And this unmistakable piece of engineering is completely made in Italy. From the single parts to the paintjob this frameset is the worthy successor to classic Italian bicycle manufacturing.
Our specific exemplar is equipped with a Shimano Dura-Ace mechanic 11-Speed groupset!
The size of this bicycle is 50s in sloping geometry (equals 54.7 cm in classic geometry - see stack)
