Description
When in the 1990s Ernesto Colnago decided to equip the Mapei team with his C40 Carbon fiber bikes for the rough pavé race of Paris-Roubaix, the initial response was a mix of disbelief, worries and laughter. However, the construction proved all critics wrong and became the most successful bike model to ever race on the cobbled roads of Flanders and France.
This success was the final breakthrough for carbon fiber bikes in the bicycle world. In 2018 Ernesto Colnago introduced another top model building on this very cornerstone - the C64, to mark the 64th anniversary of the company. It took Colnago engineers 2 years to develop a successor of C60 and yet in many ways, it still resembles it's appearance. But instead to start with a blank sheet and leave no stones unturned, Colnago took a path of tweaking and simply improving. The most striking difference is certainly the seat tube and seat post. Instead of lugged construction the seat tube seemlessly connects the seat stays and top tube. This also allowed for the aero shaped seat post. Another improvement is the tire clearance. C64 is designed to accommodate 28 mm tires with ease. The fork has been completely redesigned as well.
Like its predecessors it features uniquely 'star'-shaped tubes, the typical design which derives from the Colnago Master Steel road bikes. And like its predecessors it is constructed by bonding these tubes into special carbon fiber lugs.
Not only allows this for easy customisation of geometries, it also makes for a frame which is repairable, tubes can be replaced if need be. In general many parts of the frame have been designed a little beefier than probably necessary. The idea was to build a bike that can last a lifetime and does not need to be trashed because the dropouts are defective, the headset-seats are toasted or the bottom bracket shell has worn off.
Sure, the frameset is known for its legendary stability as well as its unique style that set it apart. And this unmistakable piece of engineering is completely made in Italy. From the single parts to the paintjob this frameset is the worthy successor to classic Italian bicycle manufacturing.
Our specific exemplar is equipped with some of the finest parts you could choose to create a build which offers just perfect functionality. This includes an Roval CLX carbon clincher wheelset and a Shimano Dura Ace 9100 11speed mechanical groupset.
The total weight is 6.9kg, which is pretty awesome!
The size is 56s (sloping geometry with 56cm C-C top tube, equals 59cm classic geometry - see stack).
