Colnago Spiral Conic Classic Road Bicycle 1994

Colnago offered a wide palette of models in the mid 90s. Carbon fiber models have been already established, Aluminium alloy bikes were perfected and there were even an option of titan frames. But steel has been always kept in Colnago line and for a good reason. Many customers still demanded a classical road bike, but they were also getting used to a stiffer riding experience of the modern bikes. So the traditional frames designs based on the legendary Super were taken to a next level and some interesting solutions occurred.

Like this Colnago Spiral Conic road bicycle, which is rather rare. First introduced in 1988 as Conic SLX Total Spiral, it featured a tapering down tube which increases it's diameter from 28.2 mm by the head tube lug to 32 mm by the bottom bracket. This should make the bottom bracket more stable and pedaling forces more efficient. Later the name has been changed to simple "Spiral Conic" and the down tube was crimped in the lower section to even increase rigidity while slightly improving comfort.

The frame itself is made of Columbus SLX tube set with inner helical reinforcements, a first choice of professional riders in the 80s. Our Spiral Conic is equipped with a complete Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 series groupset with STI shifters on the bars, which suits the classic yet forward looking nature of the bike rather well.

The wheelset has been freshly laced in our workshop using Dura-Ace hubs and a pair of NOS Ambrosio clincher rims.

This Colnago rides like a dream and it also pleases an eye of a classic road bicycle fan. You can take it for a long days in a saddle as well as for a short and powerful ride.
