Description
Gitane - a name which means 'Gypsy lady' in french - is a brand which was synonymous with French bicycle racing from the 1960s through the mid-1980s, sponsoring riders such as Jacques Anquetil, Lucien Van Impe, Bernard Hinault (1975–1983), Laurent Fignon, and Greg LeMond.
In the Tour de France, Gitane is the most successful bike brand, and has even been so in the general classification. That was until team Sky started to dominate with Pinarello in recent years. Three world championships and two world hour records add to their palmarès.
In the mid 1970s their top models were the Olympic and the Super Olympic with chromed stays and forks. A frame made from Reynolds 531, equipped with Campagnolo Nuovo Record parts, Superleggeri Pedals and Mafac (Olympic) or Campagnolo (Super Olympic) brakes. These models were sold in the US under a different name: the Super Corsa.
Most people might remember them because they were the first bikes on which Gitane introduced the famous honeycomb rear dropouts. Back in the day the Olympic and Super Corsa models were surprisingly pricey, at least if compared with the more traditional professional Peugeot racing bikes.
And here we present one of those sweet pieces, aGitane Olympic classic racing bike which was approximately made in 1974.
It still runs smoothly, the Continental tubulars provide the necessary grip while the Mafac Competition brakes bring you to a safe stop.
This bike is exactly what you are looking for if a reliable ride of steel is needed in partly rough conditions. You could even fit a pair of mudguards to it if you wanted to stay dry in the rain.
A bike for weekend rides and historic cycling events alike.
