Description

Legnano is certainly one of the most prestigieous brands when it comes to bicycles.

Champions such as Binda, Bartali, Coppi and Fondriest rode to their victories on Legnano bicycles. Fifteen Giro d'Italia, seven world championships and two Tour de France triumphs were achieved by Legnano riders. That is enough to enumerate Legnano amongst the most winning brands of all time.

Founded in Milano, Legnano started manufacturing high-end racing bicycles around the 1920s under the lead of Emilio Bozzi - also owner of Frejus. The brand was subsequently sold to Bianchi before being acquired again by the Bozzi family.


Maybe less known is the fact that Legnano also produced motorized two-wheeled vehicles. But it can hardly surprise when almost every larger European bicycle company also made at least some mopeds. The Motorcycle historically evolved from the bicycle and many of its constructing features are similar to its older sibling. And then there is of course the fact that a company which has a deep engineering know-how can use it to go just a step further and make the bicycle motorized.

Legnano went that way with some very popular models like our Legnano L 109. A moped which was based on a cased steel frame construction with proper suspension in the front, the rear and under the saddle. The powerhouse underneath it was A Sachs two-stroke T-129 engine with two gears which allowed the moped to make the most out of its 1.5 horsepowers.

Motorbikes like the L109 became the typical daily means of transportation for many people in the 1950s and 1960s, when the economy boomed and it became a financially reachable goal to acquire one. More people owning cars and motorbikes meant less space for everyone on the streets of the cities. And so the relatively small and agile mopeds and scooters, which made the most out of their size, turned out to be just the perfect fit.

Here we offer you a well preserved exemplar which is not only lovely to look at but is also complete and comes with the original registration papers. A fine piece of Italian history!
