Description
Hans Theo Mittendorf was a German frame building authority who came up with clever solutions on his custom made frames. And he exclusively built bespoke, custom made bikes. So to no surprise, the number of frames which he built is very limited compared to the ones of other frame builders who also stocked frames in the most common sizes. All his frames carry the name of the customer engraved on the left seat stay cap.
Mittendorf started racing bikes in the 1950s and very early on started to build his own frames, which he eventually turned into his profession that he carried on until 2002. Along his way he developed some innovative dropouts and seat post clamps.
What we can offer you here is incredibly rare as it might very well be the only complete NOS Mittendorf bike available.
Mr. Bache, owner of a cycling shop, had it made to his wishes in 1981. When he got it, he did not ride it but stored it as a showpiece in a part of his shop, where neither sun nor other environmental influences could do any damage to it. He did not even glue tires to the rims (neither did we, the tires are just on the rims for protective an visualizing reasons). Bache closed his shop, the bike left it and finally made its way to us.
This Mittendorf is designed in a rather simple, classic and prosaic way - that is what you might think of it at first glance. In fact it is a hidden champion.
The tubes are surprisingly light Super Vitus 980 extra legère ones, connected by classic Bocama lugs with their elegant long tongues. The chain stays have been specially formed to give extra responsibility and stiffness.
As componentry we find of course a Campagnolo Super Record groupset, including some small surprises. The original Campagnolo Super Record pedals with titanium axles for example, or the Galli Super Criterium bottom bracket with tapered needle bearings and titanium spindle.
Saddle and Cockpit are from Cinelli's supreme VIP series with suede buffalo leather upper.
We could continue this description a fair bit, but we think, the pictures tell the whole story very well. Maybe though we should give away that the whole bike in size 60, including pedals and all that chrome weighs just 9.5kg. Amazing.
