Picchio Classic Road Bike 1980s

In the 20th century, Turino was quite the place for excellent frame builders, sometimes rather unknown to the broader public. Experts, however, get a certain glance to their eye when they hear the name of humble masters like Angelo Pelà, Corrado Paratella - and Angelo Picchio.
Angelo Picchio first worked for Ernesto Francese in 1931 when he was only eleven years old. Later he worked for Benotto before had to serve in the war. Afterwards he started building his own frames and of course he did cycle a bit himself. It is said that Picchio rode the Milan-Turino together with Fausto Coppi once.

Picchio frames soon became famous amongst professional riders, including winners of Tour De France, Giro d'Italia and the World Championships. All his frames were built either by himself, Giuseppe Pelà or Francesco Trentin, who had been team mechanic for the Torpado team before.
Picchio bicycles were advanced designed with very typical details. He had very intriguing cutouts on the lugs of his models, which were inspired by old traditional Piemontese wood carvings from the late middle ages. Which is also kind of funny because Picchio means woodpecker in Italian, a wood shaping bird!
His fork crowns often bear Olympic rings seat stay caps his name even on early frames. Picchio was indeed the first one who, together with Pelà, started engraving details on the frame.
This model witnesses Picchio mastery in frame building. Made of Columbus SL tubes, it has a clean, yet refined style. The highlight are certainly the chromed lugs showing fine engravings, as well as the fork crown with unmistakable Olympic rings.
