Description
Giovanni 'Nani' Pinarello, born in 1922, was one of the whole generation of riders from child rich families who chose a career in cycling. In the era of Coppi, Bartali and Bobet, he was quite a successful amateur rider with loads of won races which eventually earned him a contract as professional rider.
The year of 1953 then saw him making his dream come true - by using money, which he got as a compensation for handing over his Giro d'Italia starting place, for the setup of a bicycle shop and manufacture in his hometown Treviso.
From then on Pinarello bikes became more and more famous, more and more refined.
In 1975 the company finally achieved its first Giro d'Italia victory. And today there are not many brands with a similar number of triumphs in big races.
Our Pinarello Air however is something you will not find in big numbers. In fact it is really rare.
The years around 1980 saw an aero-bike craze, with streamlined groupsets, clothes and frames. Columbus did their share in this development and came up with a radical new tubing now known as the Columbus Air. The tubes were ovalised and teardrop-shaped to reduce drag. Consequently they were in need of a special, equally shaped seatpost and lugs.
Due to its labor intensive nature, and the need to develop precision machinery to accommodate not only the tubes, but also the lugs to join them, bikes built using these Oval tubes were exceedingly rare.
So we are happy to be able to present to you a Pinarello Air which is in a really nice condition and which comes with a top-class Campagnolo Super Record groupset, which includes pantographed parts as well as aerodynamically improved shifting and braking levers. Both highlight that the cables are routed internally as far as possible.
This bike's condition is so good that you do not need to preserve it as a wall-piece (though it would also be well deserved), instead you could very well just go ahead and ride this beauty.
