Description
Thompson is a Belgian company which was founded in 1921 in Geraardsbergen by Hector De Smet. The brand reportedly got its name from a famous movie character of the 1920s.
Being situated close to the "Muur van Geraardsbergen", the famous climb of the Tour of Flanders, Thompson is a Belgian company through and through. They have been offering great bicycles for decades. National heroes like Briek Schotte and Roger De Cock rode to great victories on Thompson bikes. Roger in later years stated that the Thompson which he rode in 1954 to a victory in the Tour of Flanders and the Tour of Belgium, had been the best bike he had ever ridden throughout his whole career.
Taking a look at our classic Thompson road bike, this does not come as a surprise.
It is built using the finest lugs which then have been furthermore thinned in a painstaking and time-consuming process, to a point where they almost become one with the tubes they are connecting.
The rear triangle is really elegant and made to cushion the rough roads of rural Flanders. the brake cable has been routed through the top tube and the rear shifting cable through the chainstay.
The paint and lugs might look old-fashioned at first glance but do not let yourself be fooled: this is an absolutely top notch piece of frame building.
On the side of the parts, our Thompson is mostly equipped with Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport parts. Together with the wide clincher rims, they would make for a great L'Eroica bike.
