Description
When Ernesto released the Colnago C40 he started a revolution.
Before, carbon fibre has been seen as the future of cycling and there have been loads of experiments going on since the 1970s. But to that point, no carbon fibre bike proved so safe and light at the same time, that it was suitable as a standard professional team bike. Well constructed enough to equally compete in the mountains and the classics of Flanders.
In 1994, to celebrate the company's 40th birthday, the C40 was first presented to the public. A construction of profiled carbon fibre tubes, fitted together by well-proportioned carbon fibre lugs and steered with a high-tech steel fork.
However, the frame had yet to prove that it was capable of being a threat to the aluminium and steel bikes in the hard races which pro teams have to attend.
Ernesto outfitted Team Mapei as the first squad to race his prestigious machine. They proved that the bike was capable of coping with the roughest conditions. And the manner in which they did, was simply stunning. There is no bike with more victories in the cobble spring classics. Riders like Museeuw, Tafi and Ballerini made this frame a legend.
In 1996, the carbon racer made another big leap into the racing bike zeitgiest when the three Mapei racers, namely, Johan Museeuw, Gianluca Bortolami and Andrea Tafi crossed the finish line (almost) simultaneously on the 100th edition of the Paris-Roubaix. The legendary race went through the world like a fire, which is why Colnago released this beautiful special edition in honour of the triple victory. No advertising and no catalogue entry, this incredible story was enough to bring this special edition bicycle into the publics eye.
The model that we present here is 113 of 300, a truly rare piece.
