When Ernesto released the Colnago C40 he started a revolution.
Before, carbon fibre has been seen as the future of cycling and there have been loads of experiments going on since the 1970s. But to that point, no carbon fibre bike proved so safe and light at the same time, that it was suitable as a standard professional team bike. Well constructed enough to equally compete in the mountains and the classics of Flanders.
In 1994, to celebrate the company's 40th birthday, the C40 was first presented to the public. A construction of profiled carbon fibre tubes, fitted together by well-proportioned carbon fibre lugs and steered with a high-tech steel fork.
And it became available in an unbelievable amount of paint schemes. All paint jobs were carried out by hand and found the company some extra fame.
However, the frame had yet to prove that it was capable of being a threat to the aluminium and steel bikes in the hard races which pro teams have to attend.
Ernesto outfitted Team Mapei as the first squad to race his prestigious machine. They proved that the bike was capable of coping with the roughest conditions. And the manner in which they did, was simply stunning. There is no bike with more victories in the cobble spring classics. Riders like Museeuw, Tafi and Ballerini made this frame a legend.
This Colnago C40 is the first version and it comes with an original Art decor paint job. It is equipped with a Shimano Dura-Ace groupset, which suits the racing orientation of this bike rather well. A nice touch is the top-class Mavic SSC wheelset.
An iconic 90s road bike with true racing pedigree. Completely checked by our mechanics in Berlin, it is ready to ride.
ConditionThe bicycle is in good condition. The frame has no cracks, no dents and is not bent. The paintwork and decals are all original with some small signs of use. All parts have been checked and are working fine. The bicycle went through a full checkup at Steel Vintage Bikes workshop! All parts were disassembled, cleaned and re-assembled again. The frame was checked for structural integrity and all wearing parts were replaced with new ones. You can expect the bicycle in fantastic riding condition and ready to go for your vintage bike ride.

SVB quality and attention to detail is second to none! Fantastic customer service, very accommodating and helpful. An error was made in delivery and the SVB team efficiently sorted the problem the same day. I was gifted the original item and sent a brand new item, dispatched the same day. Lovely products and very helpful staff. 5*GB
Just bought a second vintage classic bike from Steel Vintage. A great bike at an excellent price and they couldn't have been more helpful. Their fantastic service was every bit as good as before.
Placed the on-line order late on Saturday evening and the bike was delivered to me here in the UK the following Thursday morning.GB
Geeky Eroica Cool. I bought the "old-school" Italian made bike shoes. They were delivered in good condition and in a quick timely fashion. They're geeky cool, just like I hoped and they're put together very well (stitched nicely, no glues where it shouldn't be) light and fit properly!US
Steel Vintage Bikes are such an excellent company to deal with. They are passionate about vintage steel bikes. They have in my opinion very fair prices and very obliging to deal with. Packaging is great and no hassle even for delivery way down here in New Zealand.NZ
The overall service provided by Steel Vintage Bikes is always first rate. Delivery and packaging is always timely and well done. I cannot fault Steel Vintage and have been a customer for a number of years.. Plan to get to Berlin hopefully in the near future, stop in for a some Kaffee und Kirchen and a bike geek mooch around the shop.IE
