Description
In the 1960s, when fall came, professional road racers turned to the velodromes to earn a bit extra in six day races. Contracts were not as comfortable as nowadays and even the great champions were happy for the opportunity to gain some prize money on wooden planks.
On this picture you can see two of the great riders of their time, Gianni Motta of the Molteni Team and Felice Gimondi of Salvarani. Offside the track there was time for a short chat and a handshake for the press.
The picture was taken at the 1968 sixday race in Milan and the outcome is almost predicted in it: Gianni Motta won together with Peter Post, Gimondi and Rudi Altig came second.
In the background of our two cyclists you can see the typical booths and stalls which form their own little village at the center of the velodrome. A heating lamp and a cot for massages are visible.
The small menthol candy in Gimondi's hand and the third person practically 'photobombing' the picture give the scene a lighthearted, improvised touch it otherwise would have lacked
The print is an original from the press service of one of Italy's most important journalistic photo-agencies, Milan's Olympia.
Size is 32x24 cm.
